The stock muffler on an ND is absolutely massive.

Looking at the underbody of a new car is so satisfying.

Agreed. No grime, only parts and fasteners.

I’m seeing cat, resonator, muffler.

The lack of heatshield in addition to the general shape leaves me confident it’s a resonator, not a second cat.
And yes that is quite a muffler!

Where’s all the rust?!

That’s not a muffler, it’s actually a cathedral. Check your facts bro.

Crap, you’re right! That speedposting will get you every time!

Demon-Xanth pointed the resonator out to me. I could really go for a No Doz right now.

Sadly that is the second cat, first one is part of the header =/

Ah, didn’t see the upstream one in this picture, well-hidden by the flange from this angle!

It's huge on my 3 too. Doubt it's the same one because of their weight savings drive for the ND

Yes that cat you can see is the second one, the front one will be up by the manifold.

Makes sense, not an uncommon setup.
![]() 04/25/2016 at 17:50 |

Nope, super common especially with inline. You get V setup and the two cats are usually visible underneath because of space in the engine bay.

My crown vic (4.6L v8) has 4 cats, two on each side (dual exhaust), and one’s tucked up next to the bellhousing; not a big fan since it makes putting aftermarket ones (since mine are dying and inevitably plugging) on pretty tough.
